Avoid if pregnant, breast feeding, or if you have a history of liver disease.
Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lingzhi)
Reishi mushrooms have been a mainstay of Eastern medicine treatments for millenia. Several molecules within the mushroom, including triterpenoids, polysaccharides, and peptidoglycans may be responsible for its health effects. Reishi mushrooms have been shown to boost the immune system. They have been shown to increase the activity of natural killer cells which are important in fighting infections and cancer within the body.
This fungus has potential cancer-fighting properties. There are a multitude of studies demonstrating activity against cancers, including prostate, colorectal, and breast. More research is warranted. Reishi has been found to reduce fatigue, depression, and increase quality of life in cancer patients and others.
Reishi has been shown to improve blood sugar control in diabetics, improve cholesterol parameters, and improve antioxidant status.
Extracts are usually 10X more potent than the mushroom itself. Generally, Reishi has a very favorable safety profile. Although, there have been very rare reports of liver toxicity with large amounts of a powdered supplement. Avoid consuming during pregnancy & breast feeding, in those with a blood disorder, in those who will be undergoing surgery, or have a low blood pressure.
Turkey Tail Mushroom (Trametes versicolor)
Turkey tail is a medicinal mushroom known for enhancing the health of the immune system. It’s packed with antioxidants, which are molecular compounds that reduce or inhibit damage from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can result in cellular & tissue damage, and chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is associated with the initiation and propagation of heart & artery disease, certain cancers, and harmful effects of diabetes & autoimmune inflammatory diseases on the body. Eating Turkey tail and other foods rich in antioxidants can reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory processes in the body. Turkey tail is full of antioxidants, including at least 35 phenols and flavonoid antioxidants such as quercetin and baicalein.
Turkey tail contains immune-boosting polysaccharides including Krestin and Polysaccharide Protein which have been shown to have anticancer effects. These compounds have been shown to increase the efficacy of anticancer chemotherapy and radiation therapies. It is possible that these compounds may also potentiate alternative cancer therapies such as high dose intravenous vitamin C and injectable mistletoe extracts.
This mushroom has been shown to combat HPV, have antibacterial effects, and may improve insulin resistance and improve sugar control in diabetics. Turkey tail has an excellent safety profile with few side effects.
